Life Skills with Horses

Horses are prey animals that require us to be fully present, fantastic at regulating our emotions, clear in our communication, and fair in how we interact with them.

Life Skills with Horses sessions require no previous experience with horses, and are completed on the ground rather than from the saddle.

What does one learn about during a Life Skills with Horses session?:

  • Self-awareness, Presence and Authenticity: As prey animals, horses are incredibly perceptive and responsive creatures (for more information on this, please refer to this blog post), making them excellent mirrors for human behavior. They also provide honest and immediate feedback, helping you discover more about yourself in ways you might not expect. Horses live in the present moment and respond best to authenticity. Thinking about the future or past around them can make them feel unsafe, and being around them can encourage you to stay present and genuine, cultivating mindfulness and a deeper sense of self-awareness.

  • Empathy, Emotional Intelligence, and Emotional Regulation: Understanding the horse's emotions and needs fosters empathy and emotional intelligence, allowing individuals to better understand and navigate their own and others' emotions. Horses also often reflect the emotions of the people handling them. If you're nervous or anxious, they might become skittish; if you're calm and confident, they may be more relaxed. Many equestrians are taught to hide their true feelings and ride through fear. However, paying attention to our fear and engaging in activities which gently lessen the fear is usually safer and more effective in the long run. Rather than hiding our true feelings, by becoming more attuned to our emotional state, we learn to regulate it more effectively.

  • Communication: Horses rely heavily on body language to understand and interact with others. When you're around a horse, it picks up on your body language, facial expressions, and energy, and reacts accordingly. This can make you more aware of the signals you're unintentionally sending out through your posture, tone, and energy. Learning to read and respond to the horse's body language enhances active listening and communication skills, both verbal and non-verbal.

  • Leadership, Responsibility, Communication, and Boundaries: As horses respond to clear, confident leadership and well-established boundaries, working with and caring for a horse teaches responsibility, leadership, and the importance of clear communication, setting boundaries, and managing expectations. Interacting with them can help you understand your own strengths and weaknesses in communication and leadership, fostering growth in these areas.

  • Problem-Solving and Adaptability: Dealing with a horse's unique behaviors and challenges encourages problem-solving and adaptability, as individuals learn to adjust their approach based on the horse's response.

  • Confidence and Self-Esteem: Successfully interacting with and caring for a horse boosts confidence and self-esteem, as individuals overcome fears and challenges, and experience a sense of accomplishment.
